Modern Farmhouse with a Twist

My client had been looking for a long time to buy the perfect home: a warm and welcoming home with just the right size yard. The home she found is gorgeous and just the right size for her and her family, with a playful split level lay-out.

This client bought this house with having me as a designer in mind. How sweet is that? She had been following my work for years and could not wait for this partnership where I would come to her new home and crack the code of this uninspiring and very dark space, yet full of potential!

The home is well-maintained and well kept, yet very outdated for this century.

Some parts of the house have lots of space, but just no room. The kitchen is outdated and just too small. The living room feel very isolated from the rest of the house. The fireplace needs a face lift.

There is this huge open peek-through right in the middle of the kitchen that looks straight into the bedroom, that needs to be changed immediately.

Also, there is a powder room missing in the floor plan.

The downstairs area will get a make-over as well: with an en-suite bathroom, powder room, laundry room and home gym.

When I see pictures of a home like this – I only see potential. My brain starts racing and I get all these great ideas.

The goal was to design a kitchen that would feel like the heart of the home. Knocking down all the walls, if possible, to create a nice gathering space with room for everybody a true family kitchen, where the kids could cook and make delicious treats and with room enough for morning rituals and coffee. While some members are in the kitchen, the other members can be in the family room, still fully connected and being able to see each other.

We went through several design rounds with plans to leave a part of the wall, have a mandatory huge post or the ideal situation no post and at all.

When we got the go-ahead that no additional structure was needed, we were so happy we could move forward with the ideal plan.

We went with a perimeter kitchen, with a designated coffee, shakes and baking area, and then a huge island with lots of storage and the microwave.

In the end this is THE kitchen with the LARGEST ISLAND possible, a full slab of 126” length.

Although it might seem that this kitchen is oversized, it is actually not, and fits perfectly in this space. Everything in the kitchen is functional and well designed.

This kitchen became the Heart of the Home.

This outdated purchase transformed into the perfect dream home for this family. We not only enhanced the atmosphere and functionality of this kitchen, yet the entire main floor is now a beautiful and functional gathering space for everyone.
